Interview with Jerome Hill

• How do you think your set went?
• I was pleased on the whole. I was a little worried on the way down, as I was told I'd be using a Heath and Allen mixer. I don't have much luck scratching on them, so I couldn't scratch as much as wanted to, but the set went really well. I managed to slip in a little breakbeat and garage amongst the techno - which is always good.
• What did you think of Holodeck on the whole?
• Really good from what I saw! My train fucked up and I got bungled onto a coach, so I didn't get down to Cardiff until about 5 minutes before set. I didn't get to visit the other rooms at all, but the main room was banging. It was excellent.
• What do you think of the British techno scene?
• It's getting there, but there should be more! There's just like one or two small groups, like Holodeck, that keep in going on in every city.
• What's been the best part of your career so far?
• The travelling - without a doubt. We've been to Brazil and Venezuela and Poland. Don't forget Wales and Scotland. The best part of my career is the music, I love it. I work in a record shop, and when we get proper tunes in I know what they're going to do to the dancefloor!
• What's been the worst?
• There's been a few, let me think. I got booed once in Venezuela. I dropped this soca tune, which I later found out to be the Venezuelan equivalent of the Spice Girls! It's cheesy, but it's a party tune - just not for them though! That's not the worst moment I guess, but its funny.
• What's you're favourite club?
• My favourite club ever has got to be Club U.K. It was one of the first clubs I ever went to and the techno was amazing. My favourite one would obviously be Holodeck, heh heh, along with our own night and Dogma up in Scotland. It's all good.
• Your idealistic night out?
• If I'm not playing, I'll usually stay in. I've chilled out a lot recently, so I'm happy with loads of lager, some good mates and some wicked music.
• Plans for 2003?
• We're off to Caceres in Spain next weekend, and hopefully we'll be going back to Sao Paulo later on this year. There's going to loads more gigs at dogma, tonnes of Warehouse parties in London, and with any luck another trip to Holodeck!
• What was the first record you ever bought?
• Ha ha ha! I'm not even gonna make up a cool one for this! It was Billy Idol's Hot in the City. Oh no, that's embarrassing, but hopefully the tunes old enough to make it look like I was naïve at the time. Before that I was into chuck berry and stuff, but I'd never bought anything on vinyl.
• Who's your favourite producer?
• There's a few. Paul Birken from Minneapolis, Sub Head and Si Begg, they're both from London.
• What's your favourite sandwich?
• Easy. Mozzarella, pesto and bacon or ham in a lightly toasted ciabatta.
