Interview with Wired

Bristol based Wired is no stranger to the world of techno - kicking off in '88, he's spent the last fifteen years travelling across Europe dishing out some seriously meaty beats. In the past he's released tracks with Simmer and Dave Preece, and his Dirtbox label is making a massive noise in the all the important places. With an eye to the future, Dave Wired tells me he'd love to set up a collective label with the Holodeck boys, beaming "C'mon Spence - the world needs more techno!"

How do you think your set went?
Quite well, people seemed to be like it. There was a really enthusiastic crowd helping me out.
What did you think of Holodeck on the whole?
There's a really nice vibe going on. It's sort of like Bristol was five years ago - no attitude, loads of different people, no one that really fits the mould of a stereotypical clubber.
What do you think of the British dance scene at the moment?
It's had a hammering hasn't it really. Techno took a nosedive for a few years but it is starting to pick up again, there's a new bunch of people involved now, I go to parties and find I don't know anyone there except the promoters. There's been a ripple effect; the same thing has happened in Germany, it's almost a global thing.
What's been the best part of your career so far?
There's been too many. Playing on the main stage at Glastonbury was amazing. And any one of hundreds of gigs in Germany, it's wicked out there - lots of weird and wonderful sights to see and experience.
What's been the worst?
I don't know, I guess having a shotgun in my face at a party in the Forrest of Dean was pretty bad. It was run by proper rednecks who didn't know what they were letting themselves in for, they were trying to charge people to get on their land and it all got a little out of control!
What's you're favourite club?
Let me think man. The ice rink is probably the best in Wales, wicked layout and a lively crowd. The N.C.O club in Germany is one of my favourites too. It's on a disused U.S airbase and its always kicking off in there.
Your idealistic night out?
One full of good techno and full of good people - you've gotta have both.
Plans for 2003 ?
I'm going out to Germany next month, which is always good. The Czech Teknival is happing in late July / early August, so I'll be out there for a bit. It's crazy; it's just like Glastonbury but pure techno, its completely underground. I'm going to be busy all year promoting new label, Dirtbox, but I'm going to try to fit in a few holidays along the way.
What was the first record you ever bought?
That's a real hard one - let me think. Ah I know, it was one I bought in a jumble sale. On one side there was a bloke talking about how to get stereo out of your stereo, and on the other side it was some mad Russian orchestral thing. Very strange. I think the other first record could possibly be the Mama and the Papas, but keep that one quiet!
Who's your favourite producer?
Cari Lekebusch, he's a Swedish producer who's been making some really original tunes, some full on techno, and new hybrid sort of techno that uses electro and drum and bass techniques. His production is fantastic, well refreshing - it doesn't fit the mould of anything else that's out at the moment.
What's your favourite sandwich?
I've been thinking about this one. I reckon it can only be girl sandwich - with me in the middle ha ha!
